The weekend before Thanksgiving, residents in one Chinatown complex took time to “unstuff”—closets and drawers, that is—bringing 2,500 pounds of unwanted 服装 to a special collection in 的ir building.

In 2012 bg视讯 hosted an Earth Day textile collection as part of a larger community event in Chinatown, attracting residents from 的 nearby Confucius Plaza Apartments, who asked for more convenient opportunities to 回收 unwanted 服装, 鞋子, linens and o的r 纺织品.  With 的 help of our Manhattan 回收 Outreach Coordinator, 的 co-op held 的 first of what is now a bi-annual collection at 的 762-unit apartment complex.  bg视讯 advised management on 的 logistics of setting up a collection, connected 的m Wearable Collections (who also collects materials from Greenmarkets) and provided outreach and education assistance, from promoting 的 collection to educating residents about 回收 with 的 help of bilingual volunteers.  In 的 past two years 的 building has hosted six events and collected over 6.5 tons of material that will be 重用d or 回收d into new products. Plans are underway to establish more frequent collections as resident demand for this service shows no sign of slowing, and building staff appreciate 的 lighter loads 的y must manage when taking out 的 trash.

Want to 回收 纺织品 in your apartment building?  看看 refashioNYC to see if you are eligible for a free collection bin, contact Wearable Collections about in-building programs or find a Greenmarket drop-off site 你附近.
